Es la capital de la comarca de Tierra de Barros, cabecera y sede del Partido judicial de Almendralejo y conocida internacionalmente como "Ciudad de la Cordialidad" y "Ciudad Internacional del Vino". Es sede del consejo regulador de la denominación de origen Ribera del Guadiana, que incluye un amplio territorio, siendo la única denominación de origen vitivinícola de Extremadura. Además también es conocida como Ciudad del Romanticismo por ser el lugar de nacimiento de dos principales poetas de este movimiento literario, José de Espronceda y Carolina Coronado.
