La Festa o Misterio de Elche es una representación de raíces medievales, dividida en dos actos, que se escenifica cada año durante los días 14 y 15 de agosto en el interior de la Basílica de Santa María. En el Misterio se recrea la Muerte, Asunción y Coronación de la Virgen María, la Madre de Jesús, y en su conjunto presenta numerosos aspectos artísticos e históricos dignos de consideración. Es, además, la única obra de su género que se ha mantenido viva hasta la actualidad a pesar de las prohibiciones oficiales derivadas del Concilio de Trento respecto a escenificaciones en el interior de las iglesias, circunstancia que la convierte en una pieza de valor único y excepcional para el estudio del teatro religioso europeo de origen medieval. Así lo reconocía también la UNESCO al declararla en 2001 Obra Maestra -la primera española- del Patrimonio Oral e Inmaterial de la Humanidad.

La Festa or Mystery of Elche is a representation of medieval roots, divided in two acts, which is staged every year on 14 and 15 August in the interior of the Basilica of Santa Maria. The mystery is recreated Death, Assumption and Coronation of the Virgin Mary, Mother of Jesus, and as a whole presents numerous artistic and historical aspects worthy of consideration. It is also the only work of its kind that has been kept alive until today despite official prohibitions arising from the Council of Trent about role playing within the churches, a fact which makes it a unique and valuable piece exceptional for the study of European religious drama of medieval origin. This was also recognized in 2001 UNESCO declared it a masterpiece, the first Spanish-Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
