Why? Because in a forensic situation there are times when every detail of a scene can make a difference. Where things are positioned next to each other, what all is actually there and in relationship to other things - all of these aspects of a crime scene do matter and ought to be recorded. Unfortunately until gigapan technology was invented it was not possible to document in such detail everything in context in such a way as to be able to zoom in upon detail and zoom out to the whole picture with such clarity.
