This rare ecosystems once covering 100,000 acres of Maryland has now been reduced to less than 1000 acres, 90% of which can be found at Soldiers Delight NEA. The serpentine bedrock underlying this area has unique soil chemistry and supports many rare and endangered plant an dinsect species. Native Americans and lightning fires once kept this habitat open but Virginia Pine and Green Briar are fast encroaching.

It's great to see Soldiers Delight here. I grew up a few miles away and spent much time exploring, botanizing, and chasing Sceloporus undulatus here. Too bad you didn't have your imager or maybe I would be able to pick out some Schizachyrium or Andropogon.
