- Description

On January the 20th 1900 General Sir Charles Warren established the brigade headquarters at Three Tree Hill. Six artillery batteries, the 2nd King's Own and the 1st South Lancashire Regiment were encamped here.
At 20h30 on the 23rd General Edward Woodgate led a force, from here, consisting of the 2nd Royal Lancaster, six companies of the Lancashire Fusiliers, Thorneycroft's Mounted Infantry, 180 men and 18 officers, and a half-company of Royal Engineers, supported by two companies of Connaught Rangers and the newly arrived Imperial Light Infantry, a Natal raised corps., to capture Spioenkop. At 04h00 when three resounding cheers were heard from the troops at the top of Spioenkop (the mist being too thick for a signal lantern) the Britsh artillery opened fire from here on the presumed Boer positions.
Thanks to Omri Nene from Three Tree Hill Lodge for showing us the site.
