This is a high-resolution scan of a sediment core collected by the JOIDES Resoltuion during Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Expedition 145, on a transit in the high-latitude North Pacific. This particular hole was drilled near the Emporer Seamount Chain and the image above only represents the first section of core removed from hole 881A (145 881A 1H 01). Scientists make careful observations about the physical characteristics of sediment cores to better understand changes in sedimentation rates, sediment sources, atmospheric circulation, and paleoclimate. Please explore the snapshots taken of the above image, which provide descriptions and information about the core.
