A Lychgate is covered gate into a traditional British cemetery.

It is formally (I hear :-) considered a part of the church. The coffin, or the body if uncoffined, is layed down in the lychgate and some part of the ceremony is conducted there. It is also the place for the pall bearers to be protected from the rain.
