View of the Westfield River in Woronoco MA (part of the Town of Russell) just above the dam which was built in the area called Salmon Falls. The well known Strathmore paper mill occupying both sides of the river here for about 100 years or so. Although the mills are no longer in operation power generation, which was originally constructed here in 1916, continues to supply the grid.
The one-lane bridge in the panorama was built to connect the mill and a few houses on the east side of the river after the old Bridge Street concrete bridge south of the dam (one source says circa 1915 and another 1923) was deemed unsafe and closed.
When I was involved with the Westfield River Canoe Races back in the 1970's this was the terminus for the 12-mile expert races.
