Nikkor P C 105mm f/2.5, Nikon...
Looking toward a gap in a stand of large eastern hemlock and red spruce near Roaring Brook in the Adirondack mountains of New York. Counts of tree rings nearby confirm that the ages of many trees in this stand approach 400 years. These ages, and the large number of dead standing and fallen trunks suggest that this is an old growth stand undisturbed by logging or other local human activities. Saplings and small trees of American beech are taking advantage of the sunlight in the tree-fall gap to make some headway toward the canopy. Other overstory trees in the stand include sugar maple, white ash, yellow birch, and white pine. Elevation is 2000 feet (600m).
