'Passage' art-music installation by Faysal Bibi

Rima Najdi's 'Passage' interactive installation, with me behind the silver curtain providing a live electronic soundtrack.

Presented as part of Bushwick Beta Spaces on 14 Nov 2010. Participants were let in one at a time, blindfolded and left to walk around a room barefoot, with a ground covered in patches of water, sand, dry leaves, rice, spaghetti, beans. Rima guided the participants and presented them with things to smell (arabic soap, perfume essences) and taste (cranberries, thyme, walnuts) as well, while I stretched and tweaked natural sounds (water, car traffic, cafe ambience, doors creaking, footsteps, fighter planes) into electronic distortions.

Blindfolded and without knowledge of what they were feeling, smelling, tasting, (hearing), participants were forced to explore the limits of their comfort zones.

Technical stuff: This is a very small gigapan image. The batteries in the camera were dying and I set it to no zoom to get the fastest image possible. I actually paused the process to capture the end of one performance and the beginning of the next. In fact the camera died just before snapping the last bottom right image, and i had to turn it back on and take it afterwards, rotating the stand in the process and resulting in serious stich misalignment. But all the mis-stitching here just makes it more artsy.
