Description

This is a photo of the hearth my father built in our house using locally sourced limestone. The image isn't fantastic as the lighting was poor and they were in the process of moving - so I shot this handheld at 1600 ISO. If you explore the hearth you'll find the same fossils I found as a kid.

Chris correctly identified the hole to the right of the stove as an air intake, if you look all the way at the ceiling you'll see where the upper air vent is located in the wall. The hole was originally smaller but one of the rocks was 'removed' and that's why it isn't more circular.
