View of the hills of Shuwayhat, an island just off the Abu Dhabi mainland. All these sediments are ancient river beds that are producing fossils of extinct forms of crocodiles, hippopotamus, monkeys, rhinos, antelopes, elephants, and other beasts. They are about 7 million years old and show that the Arabian desert has in times past been populated by a diverse tropical ecosystem supported by a large network of rivers.
