- Description
-
Migrating snow geese (Chen caerulescens) rest and feed in Minnesota on their way from their wintering grounds on the Gulf Coast to their summer breeding grounds in the Arctic. Snow goose populations are exploding due to an increase in cropland and a longer breeding season (caused by warming in the arctic). They are now degrading many parts of their wintering and nesting grounds, damaging the habitat of other bird species and causing extensive crop damage. As a result, wildlife biologists are trying to find ways to control snow goose populations.
The foreground of this panorama is by Walter J. Breckenridge. The background painting is by Francis Lee Jaques (pronounced "JAY-kwees"). It was presented to the Bell Museum by Martin Koon Bovey.
