The geological reserve at Rapa Rosie, Sebes, Alba, Romania (more detail) by Calin Suteu

(EN) | Râpa Roşie is a geological reserve of over 10 hectares. The slopes have heights between 80 and 100 m in which the water has eroded strange forms as it flowed away: columns, towers, pyramids, all in red clay. Deep gorges open to the left and right in which the rain creates red streams that fall towards the bottom with a sinister sound. The birds have also carved many holes on the slopes. The detrital deposits of Râpa Roşie are formed as a succession of red clays, grey and reddish soap-stones, friable white soap-stone in which the drainage water eroded a rich variety of shapes that make this natural monument a landscape wonder. On the surface of the slopes the soil was washed away, revealing day by day new layers of clay, soap-stone and conglomerate layers. The existence of this ravine is linked to the regressive erosion of a tributary to the Secaşul Mare river below.

(RO) | Râpa Roşie este o rezervaţie geologică cu o suprafaţă de 10 ha. Pereţii săi au înălţimi cuprinse între 80 şi 100 m. Apa ce sapă în lutul colinei lasă în urma trecerii ei forme ciudate: coloane, turnuri, piramide, toate de culoare roşiatică. Hăuri adânci se deschid în stânga si dreapta, iar apa de ploaie formează mici torenţi sângerii, care se prăvălesc în fundul văgăunilor cu un zgomot sinistru. Păsările au săpat şi ele in lut zeci şi zeci de găuri. Depozitele detritice de la Râpa Roşie sunt constituite dintr-o alternanţă de argile roşii, gresii cenuşii şi roşii, gresii albe friabile, marne roşii – cărămizii, marne calcaroase albe. Acestea sunt formaţiuni uşor friabile în care şiroirea însoţită de procesele de sufoziune, tasare şi prăbuşiri au sculptat bogăţia de forme care fac din Râpa Roşie un monument de o rară frumuseţe peisagistică. Pe abruptul Râpei Roşii solul este spălat, apar la zi argile, gresii, conglomerate. Existenţa Râpei Roşii este legată de eroziunea regresivă a unui torent, afluent dreapta al Secaşului Mare.
