This image was taken just outside of Bakersfield, CA at the beginning of the almond bloom. Rob and I finished sampling eight of the beekeepers colonies for the National Honey Bee Survey and were waiting for the Gigapan to stop shooting pictures.
I decided to take a load off while Rob ran around the orchard trying to snap pictures of bees visiting almond blossoms. I couldn’t find him in the panorama but maybe someone else can?
When we are running low on beekeeping operations to sample sometimes are only option is to spot hives while driving from apiary to apiary and look for names and numbers on hives. We did just that in order to sample these hives.
We saw the hives along the side of the road, got the name and number off of the hives, called the beekeeper, explained what the survey was about, and got permission to sample his bees for the National Honey Bee Survey.
