Actually the State Reception Room, the Gold Room gets its nickname for its lavish furnishings.
The ceiling mural of Beaux Arts-style “Children at Play,” by Lewis Shettle, the richly ornamented walls, draperies, fireplaces and furnishings were preserved to show the room in its turn-of-the-century glory.
Everything was considered in the restoration in 2008 and preservation efforts, right down to the tassels on the drapes. The 24 karat gold leafing was restored along with other painted surfaces to recreate the appearance the room would have had in its earliest years. The silk wall fabrics and the draperies have been carefully reinstalled.
