The morning of Tuesday March 8, 2011 the 'live aboards' in the Redondo Beach Marina woke to see a carpet of millions of dead and dying anchovies covering the surface of the water. The consenses is that the huge school of anchovies entered the marina during the night in an attempt to shelter from 24 hours of extremely turbulant ocean and high winds. The mass of fish was so large that it got trapped in the still waters of the channels, used up the oxygen and suffocated. The cleanup will last several weeks. As I left, the pungent aroma of millions of fermenting fish was just starting to thicken the air.
This image is made up of 187 shots, Nikon Coolpix P5100. People and water born subjects can be difficult hence there are some dismembered folks and misaligned masts and ropes.
