In the Battle of Rich Mountain, July 11, 1861, Union troops flanked the Confederate Camp Garnettt fortifications blocking the Staunton-Parkersburg Turnpike west of Beverly. A Federal Brigade led by Gen. William S. Rosecrans overwhelmed a small Confederate guard post forcing the Confederates to abandon Camp Garnett. Gen. George B. McClellan, the Federal Commander, gained great prestige from this victory and was called to Washington to command the Army of the Potomac. The Federals retained control of Beverly and all of northwestern Virginia, paving the way for West Virginia statehood two years later.
