Description

The McCartys lava flow is located in El Malpais National Monument, near Grants, New Mexico. www.nps.gov/elma/index.htm Will open in a new tab or window
The flow is ~3,500 years old and stretches for ~50 km. This pan shows an elongate crack (tumulus) that formed within lava emplaced early in the eruption (phase 1) surrounded by platforms where the lava flow has inflated to a much higher elevation. The crack is ~60 m long and 2.5 to 3 m deep. The crack is located near the Lava Falls Trail.

Investigation of inflated lava flows helps us to understand similar processes that occur on the Moon and Mars.
