Pendant la guerre de 14 18, le jeune peintre Jean Hébert-Stevens qui travaillait avec Edouard Branly a été envoyé plusieurs fois au front pour mettre au point des systèmes de radiotransmission. A la fin de la guerre, à 30 ans, sa première grande oeuvre peinte a été cette Piéta, hommage à toutes les victimes qui endeuillaient la France.
Il représenta Marie Madeleine sous les traits de sa femme Pauline Peugniez (1890 - 1987), artiste également.
Le haut du tableau a été abimé lors d'un incendie, et c'est le peintre Jean Baptiste Ambroselli qui en a exécuté la restauration en 2004.During the War of 14 18, the young painter Jean Hébert-Stevens, who worked with Edouard Branly was repeatedly sent to the front to develop radio transmission systems. The top of the painting was damaged during a fire, and it is the painter Jean Baptiste Ambroselli who carried out the restoration in 2004.
