Natural methods of local sewerage management are important in limiting ecological impact of human habitation in rural areas. This pond, part of a series of open-air uncovered treatment pools, is fed by effluent from a waste water treatment source upstream, so is rich in organic material. Algae and small plants bloom with such rich nutrients, and also help to detoxify the waste water.
The water lotuses are in various stages of flowering and fruiting, and the pond is an ecologically rich habitat for plants and animals.
