The summer solstice coincides with fire season in Arizona. Historically, fire in this setting reoccurred with frequency sufficient to clear the understory and reduce the number of small trees. The bark of larger trees was blackened, but they survived. These Ponderosa Pines are located in an area that was burned during a prescribed burn. In the absence of fire, many forest stands become choked with understory trees, and fires burn with much greater intensity, often resulting in the death of larger trees. (will edit further).
