This across the street and down the slope from The Land Institute office. Nearby are monoculture plots of possible ancestors of future food crops. These show current efforts to develop perennial crops by breeding domestic crops with perennial relatives and by crossing wild perennials and selecting for crop-like traits. The resulting perennial crops will then be assembled in a community - a polyculture - the diversity of which is expected to support the individual members thus requiring reduced chemical (fertilizer, herbicides, and pesticides) and cultural (tillage) inputs. This agriculture utilizes as its model Mother Nature's agriculture - the un-plowed prairie seen beyond the trees left of center.
