Prairie dogs and cattle have a deep impact on vegetation in the arid grasslands. Their activities modified the structure, especially on shrubs such as mesquite (Prosopis glandulosa) and Mormon tea (Ephedra tridentata). On this site prairie dogs and cattle were removed 6 years ago causing an increment on the mesquite establishment. I´m using Gigapan to measure mesquite abundance in order to compare sites exposed to different management regimes.
Is important to understand how these species interact in order to design appropriate management strategies to assure the conservation of arid grasslands in the Janos Biosphere Reserve.
