Comments on Gigapan: Deer Mountain Dike

  2. The Deer Mountain tephra cone consists of basaltic andesite (58% SiO2 and 9% MgO). Note the feeder dike in the middle of the image. Baker and others (1994) conducted experiments on these volcanic rocks and concluded that they originate as wet partial melts of the mantle.
