This view of the western side of Mt Shasta was taken from the summit of Black Butte, a dacite dome located west of Mt Shasta alongside of Highway 5.
Many features of Mt Shasta are visible in this view, including the classic West Face to Hidden Valley ski route and the satellite cone Shatina with its gaping Diller Canyon on its west side.
To the north (left) is a good view of the hummocky topography created by the avalanche deposits of ancestral Mt Shasta. These deposits are about 300 to 350 Ka and represent what must have been a huge avalanche.
