Designed by Roskell Rayne, this public library is a remarkable example of Gothic Style.Allahabad Public Library situated at Alfred Park, was opened as a memorial to the friendship of Lord Thornhill, the Commissioner of Allahabad and Mr, Mayne, the Collector. It is also called the 'Thornhill and Mayne Memorial'.The monument has served as the house of legislative assembly in British era when Allahabad was the capital of United Provinces. Presently it has been converted to a library which is popularly known as Public Library. The monument is beautifully carved from white sandstones and is an outstanding model of Gothic style of structural design. In 1879, the Public library was shifted to the present premises at Alfred Park. It has about 75,000 books,besides a treasure trove of manuscripts and journals.he marvelous monuments is perched in Company Garden.
