Description

On the day my brother and I hiked up the Abol Trail to Baxter Peak on Mount Katahdin, the clouds were low all around the mountain. At the top, though, the wind on the north side of the mountain would occasionally create fleeting but incredible vistas --- appreciated all the more because of their brief appearances. Baxter Peak, the highest point on Mount Katahdin, is the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail, which stretches from here to northen Georgia. The sharp ridge on the right is "The Knife Edge", one of New England's most challenging hikes --- the trail is only a few feet across in places with cliffs thousands of feet deep on either side.
