The rocky landscape and the snow of this island in an uninhabited archipelago north of mainland Russia made it an interesting place for a landing.
There is also a memorial in this panorama. See if you can find it. Otto Krisch of the Austro-Hungarian North Pole Expedition died on that endeavor and is buried here. The party left a note in a sealed container in a stone cairn, The letter describes their discovery of Franz Josef Land. The cairn marking his grave and the letter were discovered in 1991.
