Playa Hermosa is one of several beaches where Paso Pacifico is working to save sea turtles. Here, our guards patrol day and night, taking information on any turtles that arrive to lay their eggs. Sea turtles eggs are considered a delicacy; on unprotected beaches, eggs are often stolen to be sold on the black market. Here at Playa Hermosa, we only have two guards working, so rather than leave the eggs where the turtle lays them, we relocate them to this hatchery, where one of the guards keeps watch. On beaches where we have more guards, nests are usually left where deposited, where our guards monitor their progress. Once the turtles hatch, we release them into the sea.
