This photo was taken looking north from the observation deck on Carew Tower during the Zinzinnati Oktoberfest celebration in Cincinnati, Ohio. This is the world’s second largest Oktoberfest with only the one at Munich being larger.
Carew Tower is the second tallest building in Cincinnati. In 2010 the Great American Insurance Building became the city’s tallest because of the metal tiara on top. Carew Tower was constructed in 1930 and stands 49 stories tall over the city of Cincinnati. Carew Tower is built in the French Art Deco architecture and was used as a model for the Empire State Building.
Cincinnati was settled in 1788 on the banks of the Ohio River. Longfellow referred to Cincinnati as "the Queen of the West" in his poem, Catawba Wine. The name stuck and Cincinnati has become known as “The Queen City”. Many German immigrants settled in Cincinnati, especially in the part of the city called Over-The-Rhine where they operated butcher shops and breweries. Much of the architecture of the area remains to this day. While the OTR area had fallen victim to urban blight and became a very high crime area. However, thanks to the city’s efforts to revitalize the once beautiful area, OTR is seeing a transformation to an arts district.
Culture, economy and quality of life make the city of Cincinnati an excellent place to live and work.
In 1976, the city of Cincinnati modeled their Oktoberfest on the one in Munich which takes place the first full weekend in September every year. The first Oktoberfest was held in 1810 to celebrate the marriage of Prince Ludwig I to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. The celebration was such a success that it has been held every year, except during the war years. Cincinnati’s Oktoberfest attracts over 500,000 people each year. My younger daughter has been to both Munich and Cincinnati’s Oktoberfest and reports that the Cinti version is a much better time. Zinzinnati Oktoberfest boasts such fun events as the annual wiener dog race, the world’s largest chicken dance and plenty of German food, beverage and music.
