The historic center is a World Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO and the many monuments that make it a more beautiful place to see in colonial Mexico. Guanajuato is built in a enclosed valley. The hills that surround it and the bed of the river, have forced the people to build their homes on several levels. The city has rich veins of silver. This richness has been depleted over the centuries. Over time Guanajuato became an intellectual center, with its Festival Cervantino. Each year artists from the world attend this event in October.
