Description

This patch is rare. It is an area of rich river-bottom (the river about 1/8 mile west) land in central Kansas that has never been plowed. It has been spared the plow due to the river, the original road, the diagonal route of the railroad right-of-way, the gridwork of the Public Land Survey System (1851), and the farming practice of the landowners. Thus, this 34 acres remains native prairie, a hay meadow, while the rest of the useable river valley land was plowed a century ago. The soil here will provide a baseline of data with which to compare the soils we use as we develop a sustainable agriculture.
