This is a natural occurence but occurs here west of the mountains in Monte Alegre more often due to the atmospheric conditions. Halos form when moisture enters high in the atmosphere forming ice crystals, the orientation of the crystals bend light at angles that produce either 33° or 66° arcs. I think this is a 33° sun halo but I could be wrong. This occurred shortly after noon so the sun halo was practically directly overhead. The halo is too big to capture in a single photo and usually pictures of sun halos use a structure to block out the sun. The gigapan here provided me the opportunity to capture an entire sun halo in a single image without blocking out the sun. The only problem is, to calibrate the gigapan I usually use a horizontal line, here with the open sky, I had no clear marker to use for aligning the image, so when stitching, it grouped the images into three separate images. Luckily the center image captured the entire sun halo, fully stitched
