Description

Work crews are daylighting (digging out the ridge above) the CSX railroad tunnel visible at left so that taller rail cars can be run on this line. The Great Allegheny Passage bike trail and this CSX railroad follow the Casselman River here. Toward the center of the image, workers are cutting trees and excavating the hillside upstream of Pinkerton Horn. The felled trees and the dirt are being trucked up the steep road to be dumped in huge piles on top of the ridge (known as Pinkerton horn). J. B. Fay is the company doing most of the work. I don't know why they're excavating the hillside upstream of the tunnel here, since it would not seem to be necessary in order to daylight this tunnel, or why the huge trench in the foreground was dug.

The bridge visible through the trees at far right is the old Western Maryland Railway bridge, now used by the GAP trail. www.atatrail.org Will open in a new tab or window/
Apparently the tree-cutting and excavation is proceeding six days a week, and is expected to complete some time in 2012.
