Convict Lake, Eastern Sierra Nevada, California by ahochstaedter

Convict Lake is a moraine-dammed lake situated at the mouth of a classic glacier-carved canyon. Recessional moraines left by the glaciers that carved the canyon are visble in the right middle-ground of the image. A parking lot marks the recessional moraine that dammed the flow of the water. Older moraines are visible farther to the right. On the opposite side of the lake white boulders depositd by the glacer record the maximum height of the glacier in this location. These white glacial eratics occur only on the lower portion of the mountain. This records the height of the glacier; the landscape above the white boulders was not glaciated.

The main feature in the right background is a portion of the Long Valley Caldera, Within the caldera, the view contains Lookout Mountain--part of the resurgent dome of the caldera--and Bald Mountain, located on the northern rim of the caldera.

Convict Lake is one of the most popular fishing locations in the eastern Sierra. The opening of fishing season the last weekend in April is known in these parts as "Fishmas".
