There is a real dilemma for those whose task it is to manage the forests of southwestern Alberta. Fire is mostly removed as a natural recycling agent in these ecosystems so the trees become weakened by age and more prone to damage - even decimation - by wind, disease, and insects. Harvesting the lumber (clearcutting, for the most part) removes old trees and can allow for regeneration, but fresh cut sites are raw and ugly with lots of soil erosion turning clear mountain streams into muddy torrents. As I said, a dilemma.
The clearcuts in this pano show a good effort (in my opinion) to regrow the forest after harvest. First, the edges of the clearings are curved and more natural than removing simple blocks of timber. A bit less ugly this way. Second, there are gentle ridges or berms running across the slopes to slow erosion from water runoff. Even the roads are planned to run across slopes and not up/down. Third, grasses and brush have covered open areas, further stabilizing the soils. Good news for the creeks. And fourth, new spruce and pine saplings (likely planted) are repopulating the cleared sites - a new forest in the making.
