Description

This is the range-front fault on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada in Genoa, Nevada. The smooth grey granite face is the fault plane. In the distance down-dropped alluvial material is visible faulted right up against the fault plane. The Sierra Nevada (left side) is moving up relative the Carson Valley (right side) along this normal fault. Close up views reveal rough slickensides on the granite, as well as grain-scale deformation within the granite.

To the right (east) marshy areas can be seen on the floor of the Carson Valley, where the Carson River flows very close to this side of the valley. It seems that the floor of the Carson Valley is tilted towards the Sierra Nevada in this area.

To the right of the parking area with the green truck is a fenced area with a shack in the middle. This is a pump station for a hydrothermal system for Douglas County. Just to the south of this location, how water reaches the surface at Wally's Hot Springs. Hot groundwater flows to the surface along this fault.
