- Description
-
A group of Harbor Seals and a single young male Elephant Seal rest on the beach next to Hopkins Marine Lab in Pacific Grove, California. The Harbor Seals rest as a group, but leave a significant distance between themeselves and the Elephant Seal. Elephant Seals are somewhat uncommon on this particular beach, although one or two has visited over the last few years. Apparently, they rest here on their way to one of the two elephant seal rookeries along the central California coast. One is to the north of this location at Ano Nuevo, and the other is at the southern end of the Big Sur coast at Piedras Blancas. A gigapan of the Piedras Blancas rookery is here: www.gigapan.org/gigapans/96871
