- Description
-
This is one of several exposures visable along the new Route 55 in West Virginia ( also known as Corridor H). This roadcut is through Silurian-age Tuscarora Formation although commonly referred to as "Tuscarora Sandstone", it is actually a quartzite. The Tuscarora Formation is made or a very clean quartz sandstone, interpretted as an ancient beach environment which was re-crystallized and folded during the (presumable) Alleghenian orogeny. The composition of this rock makes it more resistant to physical and chemical weathering than neighboring units. Becuase of this differntial weathering, the Tuscarora stands higher than surrounding rocks, making it the primary ridge-former in the Valley and Ridge province.
