The amino acid sequence of the mature portion of the bacteriophage HK97 major capsid protein was used to search GenBank using BLAST. A selected group of 69 BLAST hits was displayed in Clustal X, written to a file and annotated in Canvas. The Delta domain, A-domain and P-domain residues are indicated near the bottom, with other elements in different colors, while the connecting links between the A and P domains are in black. Sets of interacting residues are connected by lines at the top of the figure, including those involved in making covalent crosslinks and some ionic interactions that are important for assembly. Those connected by black and grey lines are ionic interactions between adjacent A-domains in the hexons of Head II. The location of the maturation cleavage site is also shown. On the left are short names for sequences where the sequence is from a known phage or GenBank accession numbers for other sequences. Secondary structures elements, predicted or identified in x-ray structures are shown along the top. The HK97 sequence appears twice, it is repeated at the top for convenience.
