Grand Canyon GigaView
27 GigaPansViews
A gigapixel virtual tour via the Colorado River of America's premier natural attraction.
Grand Canyon GigaView was crowd-source funded via Kickstarter.com in the spring of 2010. It's 27 images, most of which are full 360 degree panoramas, were captured alongside the Colorado River over the course on an 18 day private rafting trip. The photographer rowed one of the rafts through over 180 named rapids in the course of the 225 mile trip.
To date, Grand Canyon GigaView has been explored by almost half a million people on various platforms including GigaPan.com, Photosynth.net, Google Earth, Bing Maps, and 360Cities.net.

Flash floods from Red Canyon pour rocks and other debris into the Colorado to form Hance Rapid, one of the biggest challenges facing river runners. Grand Canyon GigaView is a new school virtual tour of the Grand Canyon created with a collection of GigaPan images taken on a private rafting trip in April 2010 and geol...

The confluence of two rivers has always been an important place for the people that live along them. This is where the muddy and free-flowing Little Colorado meets the Colorado River. The Little Colorado is not always muddy, though. There are times when it's waters run as blue as the sky because of the calcium carbo...

Such a small creek makes for such a huge rapid. This GigaPan was interupted by the batteries dying in my camera, which meant I had to remove the camera from the GigaPan. In doing this, the settings were changed on the camera, creating this strangely omnious effect. Grand Canyon GigaView is a new school virtual t...

In December of 1966, a historic storm sent debis flows, flash floods full of boulders with the consistancy of wet concrete, down many of the drainages in the Grand Canyon. Crystal Rapid was changed from a placid riffle into an enormous rapid with deadly consequences. High water events in 1983 and 1996 further transfo...

Our party takes in the view after an early morning hike. Like any archeological site, Nankoweap Granaries are a sensitive site. Although there is a compelling interest to see what is inside of the granaries, none of us climbed up to look in for three reasons: we could disturb the site, we could fall to our deaths, an...

One of the iconic stops along the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon, Redwall Cavern has been carved out by historic high water flows before the upriver dams were in place. This GigaPan was interrupted by the loss of battery life and the position shifted in replacing the batteries. The position of other thin...

A close up view of a Grand Canyon riparian area, this GigaPan was taken in a spot that rarely sees the burning sun. Just above a terrific swimming hole, this bend in the creek was the only shady spot I could reach without wading equipment across (again). Shinumo Creek supports a wide ecosystem through arid terrain, a...
