We tend think of penguins as rather large, feathered animals that live on icebergs and star in feature-length movies and cartoons. I was surprised to discover that penguins can also be found in holes in the loose pebbly soil of New Island in the Falkland Islands. The burrows were high up the hill, way above the sea, an...

New Island in the Falkland Islands was our last stop before returning to Ushuaia. It is a hilly, dry place with interesting rock formations and wonderful wildlife. The climb up the hill behind us revealed the Magellanic Penguin burrows that you can see in another panorama on this gigapan site. There was a multitude of ...

This is a clearer view of the Base Esperanza panorama that was uploaded to the Gigapan site on April 16. In the new image the snow has stopped, and the wind has had about a half hour to clean snow off of the buildings. In this image you get a better idea of the layout of the facility, but the older image tells you a ...

New Island was our last stop before returning to Ushuaia. Although this image from the deck of the Professor Multanovskiy doesn't have the the high peaks of Antarctica or South Georgia, there are some very interesting landforms on the island. The ground looks dry, and it is, but the island supports an amazing varie...

West Point Island is just off the northwest corner of West Falkland Island. It is the last day of landings on our cruise, and the weather is warm and sunny, which is a bright contrast from our landings in Antarctica and South Georgia. We will be looking for the Black-browed Albatrosses and the Rock-hopper Penguins ...

This is our first view of Gold Harbour, seen from the deck of the Professor Multanovskiy. Athough the animals are too far away to see in this panorama, you can see the mountains and glaciers and a rather interesting waterfall. You can see the King Penguins and the Elephant Seals in their own panoramas on this site.

This image didn't come out too well, but the resolution is very high...and there is some amazing detail on the zoom in (e.g. the seaweed). This was an experiment on my part, with the Gigapan taken from a floating dock that wasn't too stable. The weather was also in flux, with the sun going in and out behind clouds thr...

Atlantic Highlands Harbor and Marina after SuperStorm Sandy. Along the horizon from left to right is Staten Island, the Verrazano Bridge, the New York City skyline, Sandy Hook, Fort Hancock Officer's Row, Sandy Hook Bay and the hills and town of Atlantic Highlands.
