  4. This area was in the distal region of the Devastated Zone from the May 18, 1980 Mt. St. Helens blast. Note how below the road the forest regeneration is at a far more advanced stage than above the road. This is the result of tree plantings in the lower area by the timber companies that own the land.

  6. Just around the corner from where Gary Rosenquist snapped the famous series of photos of the beginning of the eruption of Mount St. Helens on the morning of May 18, 1980. This is near the edge of the blast zone; many trees were knocked down here but quite a few were still standing, albeit stripped of their branches.

  7. At least this roadcut was below the clouds. You can see the 1980 ash deposit near the top of the cut.

  8. This was supposed to be a spectacular shot of the new lava domes in the crater formed by the 1980 eruption. Instead, it's just a view of the pyroclastic deposits downslope of the crater. I suppose the weather could've been worse.
