Art meets traditional Minnesota culture every year at the Art Shanties Project. The usual clusters of ice fishing houses on Minnesota lakes are re-imagined as themed art installations. As one writeup (tinyurl.com/yaj8ccg

Which kind of camera makes a better panorama: a full-frame DSLR or a point-and-shoot? This is a test that pits my Canon G10 (with a 1.54X tele attachment) against my Nikon D3 with 80-210mm Nikkor zoom. Here you see the point-and-shoot Canon in the GigaPan Epic mount.

This is a true HDR panorama made from a five-image bracket (-2 to 2EV) of each image. The image sets were batch processed in Photomatix and then sharpened in Photoshop before stitching. The panorama shows moderate flooding of Harriet Island in the foreground. See gigapan.org/gigapans/45623/ for another view fro...

Spring floodwaters surge over the spillway at Minneapolis' St. Anthony locks. This pano is not as sharp as I'd like; strong winds on the bridge shook the GigaPan Epic mechanism. For an overview of the area in better light (and lower water) see www.gigapan.org/gigapans/25023/

Falmouth is famous for its harbor, the third-deepest in the world. The docks area includes repair facilities and the Pendennis yacht factory. This pano was shot hand-held and stitched with Photoshop CS5.

Panorama taken from the observation deck of the Foshay Tower. I had to clamp the GigaPan to a railing above my head, forcing me to level the panorama by eye. I didn't do too badly, considering. At the same spot in every column, the GigaPan would snap and give a lurch, causing me to flinch. I had visions of the whole th...
