Used to remove overburden to expose the coal seams in the Diplomat Mine. Retired in 1984. The large dipper bucket on the right is all that remains of the "Mr. Diplomat" shovel, the largest ever used in Canada. It was 30 cubic yards. The rest of the shovel which weighed over 1250 tons was cut up for scrap in 1984.

A brand new Bucyrus 8750 is ready to undergo trials at the Keephills mine west of Edmonton. It will be used to strip off the overburden to reach the coal for use in the thermal generating plant. The boom is 425 feet long.

The Similkimeen River winds its way through southern BC near the village of Hedley, once a thriving gold mine. The road climbs the steep hillside to the Nickel Plate Mine which is still in production. Grades are as steep as 15% but the view from above is worth the climb.
