Rhosydd is one of the larger slate mines near Blaenau Ffestiniog, North Wales. Of the original 14 levels, 5 are permanently flooded and around 100 chambers are still accessible. This incline is unusual in having wide gauge rails carrying slate trucks on a wagon while a heavy counterbalance wagon ran on narrower rails s...

Bangor University's School of Ocean Science (North Wales, UK) has its own 35m research ship used for shelf sea research and teaching. 20 images handheld from an open boat with speed matched to that of the ship - on a nice winter morning on the Menai Strait.

Vicinity of Bleanau Ffestiniog, North Wales. Several levels down, too wet to go any deeper. The cable mechanism is a Blondin, named after the tightrope walker and used for carrying slate across the open chamber.

View from the suspension bridge linking Anglesey to mainland Wales over the Menai Strait. Designed by Thomas Telford in 1826, it had the longest single span of any bridge in the world.

Most of this collection dates from Victorian times. It is now housed in a purpose built museum in the Brambell Building, part of the School of Biological Sciences in Bangor, North Wales. 360 degree pano taken in 2008. One day I'll get back to shoot another at higher resolution.

When you have to kill an hour waiting for somebody to finish a riding session on Anglesey you can also try to make some good use of the time. It is a handheld panorama over the Menai Strait. The riding centre is pretty much on the Anglesey side of the Menai Strait opposite Caernarfon. So you can see Caernarfon in the ...

Coming up via Crib Coch I paused before going up Garnedd Ugain. From here you have a pretty nice view of the Snowdon horseshoe, the lakes Glaslyn and Llyn Llydaw and all the surrounding area over to Anglesey. The image quality might not be the best since that was one of my first panoramas at all taken in June 2009 wit...

The upper lake in the Snowdon horsesho is Glaslyn. The miners track passes the lake before going on its 400m climb up to the ridge which connects Snowdon and Gernedd Ugain. This was a 'handmade' Gigapanorma meaning I only had a normal tripod and moved the camera manually for all the 180 images. But hey, it was a nice ...

After a 150m scramble up from Glaslyn you are up an Cribau. From there you can see the Watkin path leading up to Snowdon in the north west. The lake below is Llyn Llydaw. To the south east you can see Y Lliwedd (893m). To the south in the far distance you can just about see the estuary south of Porthmadog. Another glo...
