  4. Kilbourne Hole is a well preserved example of a maar volcano. Here we can see tephra layers blown out by the eruption overlying an older basaltic lava flow. The tephra is relatively light in color, but contains many mantle xenoliths, which makes this a favorite collecting locality for geologists.
