Topic: General Gigapanning / Geolocation woes

I’m trying to geolocate and position my Gigapan. When using the Gigapan.com Geolocation feature on the latest Firefox or Chrome on a Windows 7 computer I can seem to get the dialog box values to alter the GE Plugin view, and visa-versa. How is this supposed to work?

Topic: General Gigapanning / Printing?

Had a look through the gigapan printing stuff but it seems if I can only print my own panos if I open them up for anyone else to print.

Is that really the case?

Suppose I could open one up, print it then ‘close’ it for printing afterwards.

Alexander I have a Single row machine made by MK Panosystems. I have a normal nodalpoint adapter from Novoflex attached to it. I can do a Panorama with only 4 shots.

But you never reach a gigapixel pano this way.

Looks like the “Stitcher Notes” (or $imageDetails array in the php code) doesn’t have valid ‘Capture time’ data.

I’ve updated the php code to check for invalid values before parsing and the error appears to be fixed. The code has been updated on github and on the original example links above — you should be able to download a fresh copy and get it to work with your gigapan.

Topic: General Gigapanning / On-screen measurement tool

To report back on my original question, the tool I found was a free one called MB-Ruler. I am measuring objects in my panorama that have a known distance marked on each one. I zoom in to the object at an arbitrary magnification, then measure the length of the object in pixels, enter that into an Excel spreadsheet, then without changing the zoom I measure the known distance on the object, enter that, and calculate the total length given the known length. It is not automated, but MB-Ruler does put the measurement in a little window that will hover over the Excel spreadsheet so that I can check my values as I type them in. My scenes are landscapes, with objects at many different depths, so the scale is not constant across the entire image as required for the GIGAmacro tool to work properly.

Hello. Thanks for the great tool. I am getting an error message only with my own Gigapan. Here is the error message: Fatal error: Call to undefined method DateTime::createFromFormat() in /home/content/95/2447795/html/gigapan/gigapan.large.php on line 161

http://www.kedl.com/gigapan/gigapan.large.php?i…

It works if I change the id to another gigapan….

Thanks!

Andre

I agree: this looks like a case of insufficient / no overlap. We recommend 30%.

The best place to check overlap is the images near the horizon (row 7 on this one). If you look at column 8, row 7 — we could call this grid cell (8,7) — the front of the car on the left is missing from both this image and its neighbor to the left, (7,7) – no horizontal overlap here. There’s little or no vertical overlap: the tabletop in (13,8) is not visible in (13,7), for example. Perhaps you forgot to do Setup on the panohead after changing zoom?

A minor note: the horizontal overlap increases as you tilt up toward the zenith or down toward the nadir, so judging overlap in rows above or below the horizon is less instructive.

When the Stitcher has little or no overlap, its alignment task becomes very difficult!

Topic: Stitch / Rendering Farm Computer Tech

We have some software for this inside GigaPan that was developed by Rich Gibson, but it’s not in a clean state for sharing, currently. I can’t make any promises currently, but we could let you know if and when we have something we’re able to share.

There are features of Stitch that greatly facilitate this kind of thing, that would help you to “roll your own”, if you wanted to: both Stitch and Upload have command line options that allow you to control most of their features. For info on that, see the command line options sections of the GigaPan Stitch and Upload Technical Manual: http://tinyurl.com/gigapan-su-tech .

Thank you, I will try to adjust my Gigapan.

Do you recommend other motorized heads that work well with Fisheyes?

Topic: General Gigapanning / Best offline gigapan viewer?

Panotour Pro and KRpano are a couple of viewers that would allow you to do this. I have experience with Panotour Pro and it once you import the gigapan (in a TIFF or jpg file) you create a tour that opens up in a borwser or Adobe Flash

I think that feature you want is called Columns-Left in the options menu.

Alexander I did not use the Gigapan with the Samyang as it is not suited for this puros. I used the Samyang with a nodalpoint adaptor from Novoflex. However what you can do is mesure tne distance from from approx. 1,5 mm behind the golden ring to the point at the bottom of the camere right where you attach your tripod. Mark the distance measured on the Gigapan-rail. Try to get this point aligned with the center of your Gigapan. This is the axis the Gigapan rotates around.

Next try if you still notice a parallax. You can then finetune your system by moving the camera back and forth.

Hi Phil,

Is it the embed that’s causing the javascript error or the embed wizard page?

Thanks,

Thanks for a great response, Spherorama!

The Gigapan rail, on which the camera sits, actually has a scale. Did you have a chance to see what exact measurement the golden ring would be?

Thanks,

Alexander

Thanks

Alexander,

on a cropsensor like the D5100 the Samyang lens covers 180 degrees over the diagonal of your format. So for a 360 deg. full sphere you’ ll need only 5 shots iaround if you mount your camera in portrait mode. To be on the save side you take also one nadir- and one zenitshot.

The Gigapan is not made for this kind of Panoramas. I use the Samyang 8 mm lens on a full frame Nikon D700 and D800. I cut off the lens hood in order to cover fullframe. I determined the nodal point of this lens about 1.5 mm behind the golden ring at the lenses front.

On a fullframe camera I need only 4 shots hrizontally to cover a full sphere. Here is a sample of an interor shot with the Samyang on a D700.

They have a special importfilter which allows to select the GigaPan devices. Their Raw-Format KRO works just nicely together with the GigaPan uploader.

David,

Thanks for the reply!

If I get a 10.5mm lens, would that help?

Can you tell me if there is a Fisheye lens that works OK with Gigapan? Maybe my camera model or lens are not compatible?

Thanks,

Alex

Topic: General Gigapanning / Auto focus not working with Gigapan pro auto trigger

Another tip for shooting with auto-focus…
If you are shooting a scene that has a lot of depth variation (like this: http://www.gigapan.com/gigapans/101140), set the shot order to be ROWS rather then the default COLUMNS. Then you can shoot the top rows that are all sky on manual focus but when you get to the parts of the scene that are close, you can switch to Auto-focus and pay closer attention to making sure that you don’t drop any images due to focus issues. Also note that sometime changing the focal point setting on the camera to either Centered or Average may help depending on the scene. Keep in mind though that finding missing images in a large pano shot using ROWS can be a lot harder and very time consuming so it is worth the effort to listen closely and make sure the camera doesn’t miss any shots.

Topic: General Gigapanning / Best offline gigapan viewer?

What is the best software for viewing a gigapan offline? Hoping to find something that lets me view a gigapan in fullscreen.

I know the stitcher says fullscreen but its not quite a true fullscreen!
