D Ravinder Reddy belongs to a rare breed of photo journalists in the country with an eye for picture and nose for news. He always looks for human element while clicking any picture and believes that it photo journalism is all about giving life to a news story. Whether it was demolition of Babri Masjid at Ayodhya in 1992 or devastating earthquake in Latur in Maharashtra in 1993, Ravinder Reddy’s focus was mainly on human element, which is why his pictures made it to the cover pages of national and international magazines and journals.
A post-graduate in English and a diploma holder in photography, Ravinder Reddy has has more than two decades of experience in this field; for him, photography is the first love. Starting his career as a freelance photographer in local publications like Deccan Chronicle, News Time and India Today, Ravinder Reddy soon grew into an acclaimed photographer within no time. He toured length and breadth of Andhra Pradesh, India and abroad covering a number of events on assignments from major publications.
Some of his photographs on cyclonic storm in Nellore (1990), communal riots in the Old city of Hyderabad (1990), AICC plenary in Tirupati (1991), demolition of Babri Masjid (1992), Interview with underground Naxalite leader late Kondapalli Seetharamaiah (1992), Latur earthquake (1993), Gujarat earthquake (2001), Interview with People’s War state secretary Ramakrishna in Nallamala forests (2003), Singareni coal mines tragedy (2003) and World Telugu federation meet in Singapore (2003) got him national and international recognition.
His photograph of an infant buried under the debris during Latur earthquake made it to the cover page of Time International magazine, while that of Babri Masjid demolition was made the cover picture of India Today. Besides, he did several assignments for various magazines and agencies such as Span, Reuters, AFP, UNICEF (India) Booklets and Brochures, The Week, Sunday, Indian Express, Tehelka, Jet Wings and Swagath.
Ravinder Reddy held photo exhibitions several parts of the world including Germany, the USA and the UK. He toured several nations along with the Chief Minister and other dignitaries as part of official delegation.
He published a pictorial book “India-Andhra Pradesh,” which was widely acclaimed as one of the best books depicting the life and culture of Andhra Pradesh in a pictorial form. His picture post cards on Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, Warangal, Visakhapatnam, Tirupati, Tirumala, Nagarjuni Konda are a major hit among Indian and foreign tourists, visiting Andhra Pradesh. He also brought out a pictorial book on Handlooms of Andhra Pradesha and also “Portrait of City Hyderabad with Noopur Kumar.
He did several other projects on his own on various subjects such as Girl Child, Child Labour, Rural Development, Water & Sanitation and Andhra Pradesh as tourist destination.
His future projects include: a pictorial Books on Indian Weddings, the Splendour of Andhra, Indian Temples, and Hindu Civilization. He is also contemplating publishing picture postcards on on Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Trivendrum.
Several magazines and journals such as Better Photography, India Today, Deccan Chronicle, Swathi, Eenadu, Andhra Jyothi and Andhra Prabha published exclusive stories and interviews about Ravinder Reddy, besides publishing reviews on his publications.
Ravinder Reddy has set up his own state-of-the-art photo studio “Ravi Press Photo,” which is considered to be one of the best in the country, with facilities for news, fashion and ethnic photography. He is also a consultant for WOW Hyderabad life style magazine and also Sakshi Telugu daily.
Ravinder Reddy won several national and state awards for his excellence in the field. Some of the awards are: Best News Photo Award by I & PR Department, Government of Andhra Pradesh for the year 2002; Best Photography Award from Government of Andhra Pradesh for 2003 for Pictorial Book on “India - Andhra Pradesh; Soccer Shot, Photo Contest on Olympic Foot Ball, 1991 by Press Club of Hyderabad; National Tourism Award 2005 on Excellence in publishing (English) from Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, for Pictorial Book on “India-Andhra Pradesh;” IInd Prize in State Level Photo Contest by I & PR Department, Government of Andhra Pradesh on 19th August, 2005 and IIIrd Prize in State Level Photo Contest by I & PR Department, Government of Andhra Pradesh on 19th August, 2005.
His pictures of Babri Masjid demolition and Lathur Earth Quake were published in the book titled The Definitive Images” 1858 to the Present, published by Penguin Books India (P) Ltd., and Dorling Kindersley Liimited, London in 2004.
